Berkeley Food Network (“BFN”) is seeking an experienced Inventory & Procurement Manager that can use their years of expertise to help Berkeley Food Network meet our clients’ needs and deliver our hunger relief programs both in food deserts far away from our base of operations and onsite at our facilities.  As a member of our Operations Department, the Inventory & Procurement Manager is integral to our core food operations.  We are looking for a passionate individual to help us achieve our mission!

Berkeley Food Network seeks to end hunger and poor nutrition by using innovative, community-centered solutions to build a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable food system.  With an emphasis on fresh produce, BFN’s programs improve access to healthy foods for residents of low-income neighborhoods throughout our service area. In 2021, the BFN team distributed almost 2 million pounds of food to over 6,000 clients every week! 

What You’ll Do

The Inventory & Procurement Manager is primarily responsible for procuring food for all BFN food programs and maintaining inventory control of all food assets.  Reporting to the Senior Supply Chain Manager, this position will work with collaboratively to ensure that all BFN programs including partner food redistribution, hub kitchen, onsite and mobile pantries are adequately sourced either by purchased or donated food. The Inventory & Procurement Manager  will work collaboratively with Programs and Warehouse & Facilities teams to determine and refine appropriate product line and purchase volumes through internal and external research.  Major responsibilities include using the inventory database and reporting tools to track the inventory levels of purchased product, reordering/adjusting inventory as needed to maintain desired food volume and variety, and identifying new food donors.

What You’ll Bring to BFN

  • Minimum of 4 years’ relevant and progressive experience as a proven leader in procurement, purchasing, or inventory management
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of principles, procedures, terminology rules and regulations affecting BFN’s food purchasing operations
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with inventory management or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS Office or Google Workspace Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of inventory control and warehousing operations
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills with proven ability to create and maintain positive working relationships with vendors, suppliers, shippers, and clients/customers
  • Proven track record in organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Possess ServSafe Manager Certification and Food Handler’s permit or able to obtain within thirty (30) days of hire
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment
  • Valid California driver’s license with insurable driving record. Vehicle ownership not required.
  • Comfortable with flexibility in an ever-changing environment with a high degree of adaptability

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or similar field
  • Experience in client-facing social services nonprofit organization. Food Banking experience a plus.
  • Recognized certification(s) from Association for Supply Chain Management (APICS CPIM, CSCP, CLTD) and/or Institute for Supply Chain Management (CPSM, CPSD) or Lean Six Sigma
  • Knowledge and experience with Lean and/or Agile principles
  • Experience with food inventory management software such as Primarius and AirTable
  • Inventory or distribution experience in food supply chain or emergency food systems
  • Strong, in-depth knowledge of northern Alameda County, including Berkeley, Albany, and Emeryville

Physical Requirements

  • This position is located in equal parts in an office environment and the warehouse floor. This job requires the ability to perform the following duties with or without accommodation:
  • Sit at a desk, conference room or workstation for more than three (3) hours at a time;
  • Operate computer equipment
  • Traverse the distance of the facility in performance of duties
  • Access transportation to local, state, and national events or meetings with external stakeholders
  • Communicate in clear speaking voice in person, before large audiences and over audio or video-based communications applications (e.g. phone, Zoom)
  • Occasionally assist in physical tasks and activities which include but are not limited to bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, squatting, stooping, and reaching above shoulder height to moving product and equipment more than 50 lbs.
  • Mobility to respond to moving vehicles, equipment, and loud noises/sounds typical in a warehouse setting
  • Work in a warehouse environment with temperatures ranging from minus 2 degrees to above 90 degrees.
  • Traverse the warehouse floor frequently throughout the day to execute duties
  • Stand/sit for duration of scheduled shift
  • See and respond quickly to situations
  • Operate two-radio for communications
  • Ability to comply with BFN’s mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy and current COVID-19 safety requirements including the following:
    • Ability to provide proof of up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination series as recommended by CDC
    • Ability to wear and maintain a face mask for the duration of the scheduled shift

Compensation & Benefits

This is an onsite full-time, exempt position working 40 hours per week, Mondays through Fridays, 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m.  The starting salary for this position is $79,270 annualized. In addition, BFN offers a competitive benefit package including:
